I've read that a nagra is the best choice to record sound. Would this system work if i was shooting on a digital (XL-1) What are my best options to record sound with out relying on the built in microphone. I'd also be editing in premiere 5.1RT. What microphones should i be using?

It so depends but in most circumstances i would opt for a shotgun or at least a cardioid mic. I believe on the XL1 you have control of the input levels but if not run it through a beack-tek mixer or similar. That way you can control your sounds on site some what, at least stop them from distorting or not being heard....the rest...fix in post. As I'm learning, audio is a much more important aspect than one would assume. A bit ignorant for me to say, perhaps.........but it's all a learning curve right????? Remember without the audio you have ONLY pictures so put the sam thought into it as you would imagery...............

If you are shooting digital then I would not do double-system sound. Get a good mic and run it into the camera. The XL1 does have some decent audio controls and the ability to use standard XLR connection with the proper adapter. I would try to have the "Fix it in Post" attitude. Get good clean sound--from the source in a good quiet location. Avoid streets, and other "loud" places. Also don't use the on-board mic. Good Luck

Nates, if you can, use a Nagra. Then you'll be able to sync up with your rushes, just like the grown ups do.

Seriously though, there are distinct advantages in not tying your soundman to the camera with a cable.

As for mics, Sennheiser is a mark of quality.
